Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Don't Let The "Young Adult" Rating Fool You
and don't let the saga's Vampire theme
keep you from a really great read!

When my daughter's friend bought me the first
Twilight book for my birthday last month, I tried to be
honest and told her I really wasn't a fan of vampire stories.

She insisted it wasn't like the blood sucking horror flicks, and it wasn't just a "teen" story either, in spite of what I'd heard.

She continued begging until I agreed to give it a try.

For nearly half of the book I kept asking myself why on earth I was continuing to muddle through a high school romance. I'm a great-grandmother; trying to identify with a love-lorn teen was a struggle. I even tried to put it down once. But after a couple days I was really was curious about what was going to happen next.

I picked it up again and vowed to finish at least three more chapters before I gave up.

All of a sudden I was hooked! I blazed through the second half of the book unable to put it down. I ordered the second book, New Moon while I still had a quarter of the book to go.

But I finished Twilight the next day. My ordered copy of New Moon wouldn't arrive until the end of the week, so I borrowed a copy from a friend, promising to return it as soon as my own arrived. We made that switch the next day -- not the first time my orderd books have shown up ahead of the expected date.

It was no surprise to me when I finished the first three chapters of New Moon the day I got my hands on it. It is rare for me to find a story that entertains me that well. Every time I put it down it was like leaving in the middle of a movie. I ordered Eclipse the next day, so to make sure it would be there by the time I was ready for it.

I think I understand now how people get hooked on soap opera TV. By the end of New Moon I was hooked on the Twilight Saga enough to know I was going to finish it all before I was satisfied. Not only that, the way I'm flying through them, I know I'll probably read the whole series again in a few months, and try for a slower pace.

That sent me on the quest to locate the series in eBook formats so I could take all four with me to Georgia this month. Adding more pounds to my suitcase is not an option, and there is no extra space for 4 more books in my carry-on. Thank goodness I'll have both my Sony Digital Reader and my laptop with me on the trip. I can load all four books on both devices without adding an ounce.

Reading for pleasure -- enjoying author Stephenie Meyer's style, pace, and ability to weave the characters into new fabric for four volumns, was an unexpected pleasure beyond just finding a good book. I'm really glad my daughter's friend made that introduction for me.

I'm even more glad she did it before I started seeing trailers for the movie, or seeing ads for the promotional marketing side-products -- fan club, journals, endless discussions posted. They are the stock of the teen reader, and it's obvious the teens who participate are enjoying the series and devoted to the clans. But I admit if I had seen all that first, I would NEVER have taken the time to read the first book -- Twilight -- long enough to stay with it.

And I would have missed a great piece of writing work. So don't let the hype deter you from taking more than a peek. Keep reading. You'll be glad you did.
