CARL HIAASEN is a long time favorite, both for his novels and his newspaper column that has, according to his website, pissed off just about everyone in Florida at one time or another. But his quick wit and use of characters --- and we use that term literally, "characters" --- never fail to satisfy. His children's books are equally read by adults because the stories are great.
When 46-year-old Jack Taggerdecides to do something about his failing journalism career --- having slipped from agressive investigative reporter all the way down to obituary writer, he jumps into the fire with Carl Hiaasen's unique mix of humor and danger.
The untimely death of rock star Jimmy Stoma seems just the ticket for Jack to elevate his standing in the crime reporting community. Of course to make that happen he has to get the information, write the story, and stay alive.
In true Hiaasen style, this one will prove a quick read with plenty of snickers between the pages along with a few outright laughs.
Hiaasen humor has never been better! This one was so good that I bought it for my 3rd-grade Grandson to read over the summer. It has since been passed to several of his neighborhood friends and all agree it's a great story; great reading for young people-- they can relate to the young character telling the story of his adventure to save a favorite fishing spot from pollution by raw sewage being illegally dumped from a nearby gambling ship.
It's great reading for parents as well, and well worth the cost to put a copy of FLUSH in the family library to be read again in a year or too. The characters are entertaining, the dialog is real, the scenery is typical Hiaasen as he brings you Florida landscape beyond the tourist locations.
